Storage Greenford Health and Safety Policy
Storage Greenford is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for our employees, customers, contractors and visitors. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to preventing accidents, managing risks and promoting safe working practices across our storage facilities and removal operations.
Policy Statement and Objectives
We recognise our duty to protect the health, safety and welfare of all persons who may be affected by our activities. Our objectives are to prevent injury and ill health, to comply with all applicable health and safety legislation and to ensure that safety considerations are integrated into the planning and delivery of storage and removal services.
We will review this policy regularly to ensure it remains effective and reflects any changes in our operations, equipment, or relevant legislation.
Responsibilities and Management
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the senior management of Storage Greenford. Management will provide adequate resources, information, instruction, supervision and training to enable employees to work safely and responsibly.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy in their areas of control, ensuring that safe systems of work are followed, that equipment is properly maintained and that any concerns raised by staff or customers are addressed promptly.
All employees, contractors and agency staff have a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. They must cooperate fully with Storage Greenford in the implementation of this policy and follow all safety instructions, procedures and signage.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We will identify, assess and manage significant risks associated with our storage and removal activities. This includes risks relating to manual handling, the movement of goods, vehicle operations, use of equipment, work at height and the general condition of our premises.
Formal risk assessments will be carried out and reviewed regularly or when there are changes to processes, equipment or layout. Control measures will be implemented to eliminate or reduce risks to an acceptable level and safe systems of work will be documented and communicated to all relevant personnel.
Safe Handling, Lifting and Removals
Our removal and storage operations involve the handling and transport of furniture, boxes, equipment and other items. To minimise the risk of injury, Storage Greenford will provide appropriate training in safe lifting and carrying techniques, use of trolleys, dollies and lifting aids, and team lifting practices for heavy or awkward loads.
Items will be loaded, secured and unloaded in a way that prevents falls, damage and instability. Passageways and loading areas will be kept as clear as reasonably practicable to allow safe movement of people and goods. Employees are required to assess the weight and stability of items before moving them and to request assistance or equipment where necessary.
Premises Safety and Housekeeping
We will maintain our storage facilities in a clean, orderly and safe condition. Floors, stairs, corridors and loading bays will be kept free from unnecessary obstructions and spillages will be dealt with promptly. Lighting will be adequate in all working and customer areas, including corridors, stairwells and loading zones.
All storage units, common areas and service routes will be monitored to identify potential hazards such as damaged flooring, defective doors, loose fixtures or structural concerns. Any issues identified will be reported immediately and remedial action will be taken as soon as reasonably practicable.
Equipment and Vehicle Safety
All equipment used in connection with our storage and removal activities, including trolleys, handling aids, ladders and any mechanical devices, will be maintained in a safe condition, inspected regularly and taken out of service if found to be defective.
Vehicles used for removal services will be operated only by authorised and competent drivers. Vehicles will be subject to regular safety checks and maintenance, and loads will be planned and secured to prevent shifting or falling during transit.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
Storage Greenford is committed to managing fire risks through appropriate prevention, detection and evacuation measures. Fire risk assessments will be conducted and updated as needed. Fire detection and alarm systems will be maintained and tested at suitable intervals.
Fire exits and escape routes will be clearly marked, illuminated where necessary and kept unobstructed at all times. Emergency procedures, including evacuation routes and assembly points, will be communicated to staff and displayed where appropriate for customers and visitors.
Employees will receive training on what to do in the event of a fire or other emergency, including the location of alarms, exit routes and fire-fighting equipment where they are authorised to use it.
Hazardous Substances and Prohibited Items
To protect staff, customers and the integrity of our premises, Storage Greenford restricts the storage and transport of hazardous substances and prohibited items. Customers are informed that flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic or otherwise dangerous goods must not be stored within our units or loaded onto our vehicles unless explicitly allowed by written agreement and subject to strict controls.
Where cleaning or maintenance products are used by staff, they will be handled in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety information. Suitable storage, labelling and disposal arrangements will be followed to minimise risk.
Training, Information and Supervision
We recognise that effective health and safety management relies on competence and awareness. Storage Greenford will provide induction training for new employees and ongoing training for existing staff on relevant health and safety topics, including manual handling, safe storage practices, emergency procedures and the correct use of equipment.
Supervisors will monitor working practices, provide guidance where needed and intervene if unsafe behaviour or conditions are observed. Safety signage, notices and information will be displayed clearly and updated when procedures change.
Incident Reporting and Continuous Improvement
All accidents, incidents, near misses and hazardous conditions must be reported without delay. Storage Greenford will investigate such reports to identify root causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Records of incidents, inspections, maintenance and training will be retained to help us monitor performance and identify trends. We are committed to continual improvement in health and safety through regular review, staff consultation and the adoption of best practice in the storage and removals sector.
Customer and Visitor Responsibilities
Customers and visitors are expected to act responsibly while on our premises. They must follow safety instructions given by staff, observe warning signs, keep children under close supervision and refrain from unsafe behaviour such as climbing on racking or overloading trolleys.
Customers are responsible for packing their items safely, using suitable containers and not exceeding safe weights for manual handling. Where our staff provide assistance, customers must cooperate with any safety guidance or instructions given.
Review of Policy
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed periodically and updated where necessary to reflect changes in legislation, guidance, our activities or the nature of risks present. The latest version will be made available to employees and, on request, to customers and other interested parties.
